Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about artificial turf melting from window reflection — and how window film fixes it.
The Problem
Why is my artificial turf melting near my windows?
Modern Low-E (low-emissivity) windows have a metallic coating that reflects heat. That coating acts like a curved mirror, focusing reflected sunlight into a concentrated beam that can exceed 200°F. Artificial turf melts at around 175°F. The damage appears in specific spots that align with your window positions — usually in the afternoon when the sun hits the windows directly.
What is a Low-E window and why does it cause this problem?
Low-E windows have a microscopically thin metallic coating that reflects infrared heat back into your home, making them energy efficient. But that same coating is highly reflective — more so than standard glass. When sunlight hits at the right angle, it creates a focused beam rather than scattering. This is the same physics as a magnifying glass.
How do I know if my windows are causing the turf damage?
Look for melted, warped, or discolored patches in your turf that align with window positions. The damage is usually worse in the afternoon and in specific spots rather than uniformly across the turf. If you hold a lighter near the glass and see a slightly different color in one of the flame reflections, you likely have Low-E glass.
Does this only affect artificial turf?
No. Window reflection can damage any outdoor material that absorbs heat. We've seen damage to vinyl fencing, wood decking, patio furniture, composite decking, outdoor rugs, and even pool liners. Artificial turf is the most common victim because it's widespread and has a relatively low melting point.
Is this a defect in my turf?
No. This is a physics problem caused by your windows, not a manufacturing defect in the turf. Replacing your turf without addressing the window reflection will result in the same damage happening again.
The Solution
Will window film actually stop my turf from melting?
Yes. Anti-reflective and diffusion window films eliminate the focused reflection before it reaches your turf. We select the right film based on your window type, orientation, and the severity of the problem. After installation, the reflection is gone — permanently.
Do I need to replace my windows?
No. Window film is applied directly to your existing glass. It's a fraction of the cost of window replacement and solves the reflection problem completely. Most installations are completed in a single day.
What types of window film do you use for turf protection?
We use anti-reflective films, diffusion films, and exterior matte films depending on your specific situation. Anti-reflective film reduces the reflectivity of the glass. Diffusion film scatters the reflected light in multiple directions instead of focusing it. The right choice depends on your window type, orientation, and the severity of the reflection.
Will the film affect my view or the appearance of my windows?
Turf protection films are selected to minimize visual impact. Most films have a slight tint or matte appearance on the exterior, but the change is subtle. Your view from inside is not significantly affected. We'll show you samples before installation so you know exactly what to expect.
How long does window film last?
Quality window film lasts 10–15 years with proper installation. We use films from established manufacturers with product warranties. The film is a permanent solution — not a temporary fix.
Cost & Process
How much does turf protection window film cost?
Cost depends on the number of windows, their size, and the film type required. Most residential jobs in Southern California range from $300–$900. We provide free on-site assessments and written quotes before any work begins.
How long does installation take?
Most residential installations are completed in a single day. Larger commercial projects may take 2–3 days. We work around your schedule and minimize disruption to your home.
Do I need to be home during installation?
For exterior film applications, you don't need to be home. For interior applications, someone needs to be present. We'll discuss the specifics during your free assessment.
Do you serve my area?
We serve all of Southern California — Orange County, Los Angeles County, San Diego County, Riverside County, and the Coachella Valley. If you're in SoCal, we can help.
